The island near Burano
It’s an island of about 300 inhabitants near Burano, connected to it by a bridge.
.The landscape is still characterized by the presence, like in other islands of the lagoon of cultivated areas (mainly vineyards and orchards) for the traditional activities of fruit and vegetables (such as the cultivation of artichokes).
Once known as Maiurbium (perhaps from Magna Urbs, “largest city”), like all the ancient towns in the lagoon was born as a result of the depopulation of the inland cities, under the pressure of recurrent invasions. Mazzorbo reach its top in the tenth century. As the nearby towns, began to decline in favor of Venice. Then thus became an island used for agricultural activities and relax.
In Mazzorbo you can visit the ancient church of S. Caterina, built between 1283 and 1291 (its bell is the oldest of the Lagoon).
